The procedures behind the prices
Laser vision correction reshapes the cornea to reduce short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism. The three procedures most often priced in Thailand are LASIK (usually 'FemtoLASIK', where a laser creates a thin flap in the cornea before a second laser reshapes it), SMILE (where a small lens-shaped piece of tissue is removed through a small incision, with no flap) and PRK (where the surface layer is removed and grows back, with no flap or incision).
On the pages we read, PRK was the lowest-priced option at Bangkok Hospital, at 71,000 baht for both eyes, while TRSC priced LASIK and PRK the same, at 89,000 baht. SMILE packages ran from 101,000 to 129,000 baht. The differences reflect the equipment, the package contents and the hospital's overheads as much as the procedure itself, so compare the inclusions rather than the headline.
Not everyone is suitable for laser treatment. People with thin corneas, high prescriptions or some eye conditions may be offered an implantable lens (ICL) instead. ICL is priced per eye: Bumrungrad listed a single-eye ICL at 129,000 baht, and TRSC listed a low-diopter ICL at 79,000 baht per eye plus a separate 60,000 baht lens deposit per eye.
The examination comes first, and often costs extra
Every provider requires a detailed pre-operative examination to measure the cornea, map its shape and check eye health. This decides which procedure, if any, is suitable. TRSC lists this examination at 3,500 baht and Bangkok Hospital lists a pre-op check at 2,000 baht. Bumrungrad's packages exclude the initial consultation and suitability tests, and its SMILE page states that the package is not refunded if the doctor finds the procedure unsuitable.
Contact lens wearers are usually asked to stop wearing lenses for a period before the examination, because lenses change the shape of the cornea. Ask the clinic how long, and plan your trip around it. If you are travelling for treatment, consider whether you can have the examination first and decide on surgery afterwards, rather than buying a package before you know you are suitable.
Who the published price applies to
Several published prices are restricted. Bangkok Hospital's 101,000 baht FemtoLASIK and SMILE prices are listed for fly-in patients, while a separate online FemtoLASIK offer at 88,000 baht is limited to Thai citizens and expatriates buying online. TRSC states that its fees differ by surgeon, with its Medical Director's rates higher, and exclude non-standard medication.
When you ask for a quote, say whether you are a visitor or a resident, which surgeon you would like and whether you are buying a package. Ask for the quote in writing with the procedure name, the laser platform and the validity date.
Aftercare, enhancements and timing a trip
Laser eye surgery is followed by check-ups, typically the next day and again over the following weeks and months. Ask how many follow-up visits the price includes, what happens if you need a further check after you have gone home, and whether the clinic can share your records with an optometrist or ophthalmologist where you live.
Some patients need a second treatment, often called an enhancement, if the result is not as planned. Ask whether an enhancement within a set period is included, and at what price if not. Recovery also differs between procedures: PRK typically involves a longer period of discomfort and blurred vision than LASIK or SMILE. Ask the clinic how soon you can fly, swim or drive, and plan enough time in Thailand for the follow-up visits it recommends.
Checking the surgeon and the clinic
Laser vision correction should be performed by an ophthalmologist. The Medical Council of Thailand publishes a lookup for checking that a doctor is registered, and hospitals usually list their eye surgeons with their training. Ask the clinic to name the surgeon who will operate, and check the name before you pay.
Standalone clinics are licensed as healthcare facilities by the Department of Health Service Support, whose online lookup at hosp.hss.moph.go.th shows the licence type and status. This guide does not replace clinical advice; ask an ophthalmologist whether laser treatment is suitable for your eyes.
Questions to ask before you book laser eye surgery
- Which procedure do you recommend for my eyes, and why that one rather than the alternatives?
- Is the pre-operative examination included, and is anything refunded if I am found unsuitable?
- Is the quoted price for both eyes, and does it apply to visitors or only to residents or online buyers?
- Who will operate, and can I check their registration with the Medical Council?
- How many follow-up visits are included, and is an enhancement covered if I need one?
- How long should I stay in Thailand after surgery, and when can I fly?
Frequently asked questions
How much does LASIK cost in Thailand?
On the official pages we read in October 2026, LASIK for both eyes was listed at 89,000 baht at TRSC and FemtoLASIK at 101,000 baht for fly-in patients at Bangkok Hospital. The pre-operative examination was charged separately at both.
Is SMILE more expensive than LASIK?
On the pages we read, SMILE packages for both eyes were listed at 101,000–129,000 baht, the same as or more than LASIK at the same provider. Package contents differ, so compare what each includes.
Is the price for one eye or both?
Laser treatment prices in the table are for both eyes. ICL prices are per eye, and TRSC also asks for a lens deposit per eye.
What if I turn out not to be suitable?
Ask before you pay. Bumrungrad's SMILE package, for example, is not refunded if the doctor finds the procedure unsuitable, and the suitability tests are excluded from its packages.
How long should I stay after laser eye surgery?
Clinics usually want to see you the day after surgery and again later. Ask the clinic for its follow-up schedule and plan your stay around it.
