How much does IVF cost in Thailand?

What Thai hospitals and fertility clinics publish about IVF package prices, what those packages leave out, and how to compare quotes like for like.

Updated
Key points
  • Published IVF packages we found range from about 280,000 to 495,000 baht, depending on what each one covers.
  • Packages differ in what they include: medication allowances, ICSI, embryo freezing, genetic testing and frozen transfers are the usual differences.
  • Some published prices apply only to Thai nationals and residents, and some only to patients travelling in for treatment.
  • A package price covers one cycle. It is not a price for a baby, and a second cycle or transfer is billed again.
  • Ask every clinic for an itemised written quote and compare line by line.

Why IVF prices are hard to compare

IVF is not one procedure but a sequence of steps: tests, several days of hormone injections, monitoring scans, egg collection, laboratory work, embryo transfer and early pregnancy support. A clinic can bundle any combination of these into a package, and the headline figure depends on where it draws the line. Two packages a hundred thousand baht apart may cover very different amounts of treatment.

The packages in the table above illustrate this. One is priced as three separate stages that add up to a total. Another includes a fixed allowance of stimulation medication and a single fresh transfer. A third bundles a full stimulation cycle with genetic testing of embryos and a later frozen transfer. None of them is directly comparable with the others without reading the inclusions line by line.

What a typical package includes

Most published packages cover the core of a cycle: the specialist's fees for a set number of visits, ultrasound monitoring while the ovaries respond to medication, egg collection under sedation, fertilisation in the laboratory, a few days of embryo culture and one embryo transfer. Some include ICSI (injecting a single sperm into each egg) as standard; others charge for it separately.

Where a package includes stimulation medication, it may cap the amount. Medication needs vary between patients, and someone who needs a higher dose may pay the difference. Pregnancy-support hormones after transfer are sometimes included for a fixed period.

Costs that are often extra

The items most often billed outside a package are: consultations and blood tests before you sign up; extra medication beyond the package allowance; embryo freezing and annual storage; preimplantation genetic testing (PGT); time-lapse embryo monitoring; and any frozen embryo transfer in a later cycle. Superior A.R.T., for example, publishes a separate estimate for pre-IVF tests and for each frozen transfer.

Genetic testing has a large effect on the total. Both Bangkok Hospital and MedPark publish a second, higher-priced package that adds PGT and freezing. If you are comparing a clinic's basic package with another clinic's package that includes PGT, the difference in price may be mostly the testing.

If you are travelling for treatment, add the cost of staying near the clinic. Bangkok Hospital's page suggests a stay of around three to four weeks for a full cycle, or two visits if embryos are frozen for genetic testing and transferred later. Flights, accommodation, local transport and time away from work can add substantially to the overall cost.

Who a published price applies to

Read the conditions under each package. MedPark states that its package prices apply only to Thai nationals and expatriates living in Thailand. Bangkok Hospital's IVF package page says it applies to patients travelling in for treatment. Some packages cannot be combined with insurance, other discounts or third-party payers, and most say the doctor decides whether the package suits you.

Packages also tend to be valid for a set period. Bangkok Hospital states an expiry date on its page; MedPark and Superior A.R.T. do not show one. Treat any undated price as a guide and confirm it in writing.

One cycle is not the whole cost

A package price covers a single attempt. Many people need more than one transfer, and some need more than one stimulation cycle. The chance of success in each cycle depends mainly on age, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, so the realistic budget for one person can be very different from another's.

Frozen embryos from one stimulation cycle can sometimes be used in later transfers, which are usually cheaper than a new stimulation. Ask how many embryos the clinic would expect to freeze for someone in your situation, how storage is charged, and what a frozen transfer costs.

How to get a comparable quote

Ask each clinic for an itemised written quote based on your own test results, not the general package. Then compare the same items side by side: medication, monitoring, egg collection, ICSI, culture, freezing, storage, genetic testing and each transfer. Ask what happens to the cost if the cycle is cancelled or if no embryos are suitable for transfer, and whether any part is refunded.

Finally, discuss the treatment plan itself with a fertility specialist. The cheapest quote is not necessarily the plan that suits you, and the most extensive package may include services you do not need.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Is this price available to me, given my nationality and residence?
  • How much stimulation medication is included, and what does extra medication cost?
  • Is ICSI included, or charged per cycle?
  • Are embryo freezing and storage included, and what does storage cost after the first year?
  • What does a frozen embryo transfer cost if the first transfer does not succeed?
  • Which pre-treatment tests do I need, and what do they cost?
  • What is refunded if the cycle is cancelled?
  • How long is the quoted price valid?

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest IVF package in Thailand?

Among the official clinic pages we checked, the lowest published package was MedPark's IVF/ICSI package at 280,000 baht, which applies only to Thai nationals and residents. Packages differ in what they include, so the lowest headline price is not always the lowest total cost.

Does an IVF package include medication?

Some do, up to a stated limit; others do not say. Check the inclusions and ask what extra medication would cost if you need a higher dose.

Is genetic testing of embryos included?

Usually not in the basic package. Bangkok Hospital and MedPark both publish separate, higher-priced packages that include it.

How long do I need to stay in Thailand for IVF?

Bangkok Hospital's page suggests about three to four weeks for a full cycle, or two shorter visits if embryos are frozen and transferred later. Ask your clinic which steps can be done before you travel.
