How check-up packages work
Most private hospitals in Thailand, and some public ones, sell health screening as fixed packages. A package bundles a set list of tests with a physical examination and a consultation in which a doctor explains the results. The hospital usually runs the tests in a dedicated check-up centre over a morning, with fasting beforehand.
Packages are normally split by sex and age band, because the tests recommended for, say, a woman over 40 differ from those for a man under 35. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya's basic package, for example, is offered for men aged 16 to 35, while the Chiang Mai branch's advanced package is aimed at men aged 40 and over.
The headline price usually includes the doctor's fee and hospital service charges. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya's page says its price includes the doctor's fee for reporting results and the hospital service charge, and Bumrungrad's package page states that its prices include the doctor's fee and are per person in Thai baht.
What different tiers usually add
A basic package typically covers a physical examination, a full blood count, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol and other blood fats, liver and kidney function, a urine test and a chest X-ray. Samitivej's basic programme adds an ECG; Bangkok Hospital Pattaya's adds a body composition analysis and lipoprotein(a).
Mid-range packages tend to add longer-term blood sugar (HbA1c), vitamin levels, hepatitis screening, stool tests and an abdominal ultrasound. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai's 30-item package for men over 40 also includes the tumour markers PSA, CEA and AFP.
The most extensive packages add cardiac tests such as an exercise stress test or echocardiogram, carotid ultrasound, bone density, eye and hearing screening and, in women's versions, mammography, breast ultrasound and a Pap smear. Bangkok Hospital headquarters' Ultimate Health Checkup is an example at 40,000 baht for men and 43,000 baht for women.
More tests are not automatically better. Some screening tests can produce false alarms that lead to further investigations. A doctor can advise which tests are appropriate for your age, sex, family history and existing conditions; ask before choosing a higher tier.
Reading the terms
Many published prices are promotions with an end date, and some separate the purchase window from the service window. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya's basic package, for instance, shows a sale price valid to 31 December 2026 with service available until 30 April 2027.
Pre-payment is common and refunds are not. Bumrungrad states that pre-payment is required for all check-up programmes, that the service is available for 365 days from purchase, and that no discounts may be applied to package prices. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai's package is non-refundable, cannot be combined with other discounts or transferred, and requires any pending tests to be completed within 30 days.
Packages are usually fixed: Bangkok Hospital Pattaya says package items cannot be changed. If you want an extra test, ask whether it can be added on the day and at what price. Bumrungrad lists optional add-ons such as a stress test, bone density, breast screening and abdominal ultrasound that must be bought on the same day as the programme.
What is not included
If your results show something that needs follow-up, the next steps are normally billed separately. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya's page states that its price does not cover specialist doctor fees, additional tests or medication, and Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai excludes specialist consultation fees and medication.
Ask how results are delivered — on the day, in a printed report, by email or through an app — and in which language. If you want your home doctor to review the results, ask for the full laboratory values, not just a summary.
On the day
Most packages need an appointment, sometimes several days in advance, and fasting for 8 to 12 hours beforehand with only water allowed. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai also asks patients to sleep at least six hours and avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the check-up. Follow the specific instructions from your hospital.
Bring your passport; the UK government notes that showing one is mandatory for treatment at both public and private hospitals. Bring a list of your current medicines and ask the hospital whether you should take them on the morning of the check-up.
Before you book a package
- Is the package for your sex and age band?
- Which tests does it include, and which would a doctor suggest for you?
- Does the price include the doctor's results consultation and service charges?
- When does the price expire, and by when must you use the package?
- Is it pre-paid and non-refundable? Can items be swapped or added?
- How and in what language will you receive results?
Frequently asked questions
How much is a basic health check-up in Thailand?
On the official hospital pages we read in October 2026, basic packages were published at 3,494 baht (Samitivej, promotional) and 5,950 baht (Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, men 16–35). Prices change often, so check the current page.
Do check-up prices include the doctor's fee?
On the pages we read, yes: Bumrungrad, Samitivej and Bangkok Hospital Pattaya all state that the package price includes the doctor's fee and service charges. Follow-up consultations with specialists are usually extra.
Can I get a refund if I do not use a pre-paid package?
Often not. Several hospitals state that pre-purchased packages are non-refundable and must be used within a set period. Read the terms before paying.
Do I need to fast before a check-up?
Usually yes. The packages we read ask for 8 to 12 hours of fasting with water allowed. Follow your hospital's own instructions and ask a doctor about your regular medicines.
Are more expensive packages better?
Not necessarily. Larger packages add more tests, but not every test suits everyone. Ask a doctor which screening is appropriate for your age, sex and history.
